Follow Dr. John Dolittle in his new adventures in the animal world. Starring Selena Gomez and Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. plays Dr. Dolittle in this adventure-filled film directed by Stephen Gaghan.

Surely we all know or at least have heard (or seen some of the previous films) about Dr. Dolittle. This character, imagined by Hugh Lofting in the trenches of World War I as a remedy for the horror and tedium of war, is a physician and naturalist renowned for his ability to talk to animals. His friends include few humans and many animals, such as Polynesia the macaw and Jip the dog.

Dolittle is the latest film version of the adventures of this beloved character. Based primarily on The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, the second book of the series, the film tells the story of a withdrawn Dr. Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.), turned to melancholy after the death of his wife. One day, the doctor is summoned by Queen Victoria to cure her of an illness. The only cure, however, is a magical fruit found only in the distant land of his late wife. Along with Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett), a boy the doctor befriends, and his crew of animals, Polynesia (Emma Thompson), Kevin the squirrel (Craig Robinson), Chee-Chee the gorilla (Rami Malek), Yoshi the polar bear (John Cena), Plimpton the ostrich (Kumail Nanjiani) and Dab-Dab the duck (Octavia Spencer), Dolittle embarks in search of the fruit that can cure the queen's ailment. Along the way, this improvised band of adventurers must overcome the attacks of Blair Müdfly (Michael Sheen), the Doctor’s great rival, and a whole series of obstacles and setbacks, typical of the adventure genre.

Tom Holland as Jip the dog, Selena Gomez as Betsy the giraffe, Marion Cotillard as Tutu the fox, Ralph Fiennes as Barry the tiger and Antonio Banderas as Rey Rassouli complete the film’s stellar cast.

Perhaps Dolittle is primarily a children's movie. But with the same producers from Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, you can expect a humorous side from Dolittle that can appeal to all audiences.

Don't miss Dolittle on HBO and HBO GO.
