The 71st Primetime Emmy ® Award nominations were announced on July 16th – and HBO continues its supremacy over primetime television as the network earned 137 nominations for its programs – a record for the network’s history.

The clear standout in the nominations battle was the epic GAME OF THRONES – which set the record for most nominations in a single year totaling to 32 nominations. HBO stands out amongst all networks at it carried nominations in virtually all categories; including acting, directing, comedy, drama, limited series, variety series, original films and technical awards.

Here is a recap of such nominations:

will

GAME OF THRONES – the groundbreaking series has enjoyed an incredible year as it caps its final season with record breaking viewership and acclaims from critics. Last year’s winner for Outstanding Drama Series, the series was once again nominated for the same category and its cast received acting nominations (the highest to date) including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Kit Harrington and Outstanding Lead Actress for Drama Series for Emilia Clarke. The Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress categories was stacked with GAME OF THRONES actors as Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams were all nominated as well. Show runners and creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were nominated for Outstanding Directing and Writing. It’s safe to assume that regardless what happens on September 22nd, - GAME OF THRONES will forever be enshrined in Emmy ® history as one of the most lauded programs in television history.

Chernobyl

CHERNOBYL & SHARP OBJECTS - While GAME OF THRONES did gather attention for the most nominations, it was the limited mini series CHERNOBYL who drew the most positive response from critics and viewers as it was the highest rated TV show on IMBD’s history. The acclaimed miniseries received 19 nominations – including acting ones for Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson. The series, which centers around the nuclear accident in Chernobyl in 1986, also earned a nomination in one of the most competitive categories in this years Emmys ® - Outstanding Limited Series; a nomination it shares with another HBO series, SHARP OBJECTS which picked up 8 nominations; including acting ones for Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson in the Outstanding Actress and Supporting Actress categories. The psychologically trilling show has earned rave reviews for its beautiful pacing and outstanding performances by Adam and Clarkson.

Barry

VEEP & BARRY – On the comedic front, it’s a friendly in-network battle between the newcomer BARRY, celebrating its sophomore season with 17 nominations and VEEP, a veteran in the Emmy ® universe led by talented and perennial nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus; nominated this year for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Julia Louis-Dreyfus earns her 26th Emmy ® nomination and has won the award 11 times (including 4 times as Selena Meyer in VEEP). The political comedy show has proven a winner for audiences around the world; specially during a unique political climate in our country. The show features veterans of comedy and improvisation including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Tony Hale. While VEEP is enjoying an incredible journey as the show rides into the sunset in its final season, BARRY leads a competitive pack as well. The show, which has Bill Hader as a nominee for acting, writing, directing, and Outstanding Comedy Series, has proven to be a fan favorite and a summer hit for HBO. The talented SNL veteran has incredible support from his insanely talented cast which includes television star and American icon Henry Winkler who is defending his Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series trophy – an award he won last year and marked his first Primetime Emmy ® win in over 40 years of acting which he spoke about in his speech as the whole theater stood up and applauded the veteran television actor. While there is no clear cut favorite to win in these categories, HBO proves again that they are able to compete in this category year in and year out.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER -  In an age of unique political electricity in the United States, its ironic and refreshing that HBO decided to have John Oliver, an Englishman, lead its Sunday night lineup for political commentary and it has paid off – both in ratings and accolades as LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER earned 9 nominations – including Outstanding Variety Talk Series, an award the show won last year and will compete in once again this year alongside the writing category. John Oliver, alongside HBO, has deviced a political platform unique to his brand of comedy; deciding to solely focus on one topic and delve deeply in it; often ridiculing those he targets and rightly so.

Succession

SUCCESSION & TRUE DETECTIVE – The satirical dramatic series SUCCESSION, in its debut season, earned 5 nominations including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for comedy veteran writer and Academy Award ® Winner Adam McKay. The series, which centers around a dysfunctional family fighting over control over their media company’s empire, earned fantastic reviews and will be a sleeper favorite to take the Outstanding Drama series trophy. Not to be undone is the third installment of TRUE DETECTIVE which is led by Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie nominee Mahershala Ali.DEADWOOD: THE MOVIE & MY DINNER WITH HERVÉ -  HBO decides to revive one of its most hailed series; yet through the lenses of a television movie as DEADWOOD: THE MOVIE comes back to the network as an Outstanding Television Movie nominee alongside MY DINNER WITH HEVÉ – who surprised viewers and critics alike by the outstanding performances of Jamie Dornan, Andy Garcia and Emmy ® winner Peter Dinklage.

My Dinner with Herve

DEADWOOD: THE MOVIE & MY DINNER WITH HERVÉ - HBO decide revivir una de sus series más aclamadas; sin embargo, a través de los lentes de una película de televisión como DEADWOOD: THE MOVIE regresa al canal y nominada como Mejor Película de Televisión junto a MY DINNER WITH HERVÉ - quien sorprendió a los espectadores y a los críticos por igual con las excelentes actuaciones de Jamie Dornan, Andy García y el ganador del Emmy ® Peter Dinklage.

Leaving Neverland

LEAVING NEVERLAND – Perhaps the most controversial topic nominated for an Emmy ® is the riveting documentary about the two men who were allegedly sexually abused by Michael Jackson. The film earned 5 nominations including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and it has sparked a national debate over the events related to these two men and the King of Pop. Moreover, it forced viewers to opine on the basic question of whether they could ever listen and enjoy Michael Jackson’s music after learning what happened at Neverland. Nevertheless, the documentary was raw, chilling, and powerful and it’s a favorite to win in the documentary category.

With a record setting 137 nominations under its belt, HBO will compete in virtually all categories come Emmy ® night (both the Primetime and Creative Emmy Awards). The network will bring its exceptional programming to television’s biggest night and don’t be surprised if it also sets records for most wins.

The 71st Primetime Emmy ® Awards will take place on on September 22nd, 2019.
