Enjoy Run, HBO's new series in eight installments produced by a new star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Between comedy, romance, and suspense, Run becomes an adventure where its characters will not stop running... or running away.
Sometimes running is the same as running away, but sometimes running away results in everything falling apart. A poem by León Felipe says: "And it is useless, useless every escape (neither from below nor from above). It always comes back. Always." For many, this perception of being tied down and that life could have been something else is inescapable. A few do manage to leave everything behind and run away. But sometimes the cure can be worse than the disease.
Ruby Richardson is perhaps one of those people who think that life wasn't what she thought it was. She sits behind the wheel of her truck, looks out at the mall in front of her, and finds herself there, static, stopped in time, in life.
A text that reaches her cell phone takes her out of her daze. Someone named Billy has written RUN in all capital letters.
Will Ruby run? Yes, she will, and this is what will start the story of Run.
Ruby (Merritt Wever) will go to meet Billy (Domhnall Gleeson), with whom, more than fifteen years ago, she made a youthful and loving promise: if either of them sent a message with the aforementioned word, they would leave everything, absolutely everything to go to meet the other in Grand Central Terminal, and thus begin a journey by train with no particular direction.
But what at first seems to be a romantic outburst begins to present dark undertones, without losing, however, its air of adventure. Billy turns out to be a successful man, with no love traumas, and Ruby doesn't quite understand why he has called her. Thus, the career that at first seems nostalgic and sexy, ends up becoming vertigo of suspense and concealment.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, as many know, is the latest breakout star. With the comedy series Fleabag, she achieved a smash hit that took her to the Emmys and the Golden Globes. From there, she jumped into creating and producing Run with HBO, while also participating in the script for No Time to Die (2020), the upcoming James Bond film. She is ideal for this story, because, as you will remember, she is also the creator and writer of the series Killing Eve, which, between action, suspense, and comedy, tells the story of the love/hate relationship between Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), an MI6 agent, and Villanelle (Jodie Comer), a psychopathic and sophisticated hit woman.
Vicky Jones, who has already worked with Waller-Bridge on Fleabag and Killing Eve, writes the first episode of Run, and Kate Dennis and Natalie Bailey share the direction. Bailey's behind-the-scenes work includes episodes of Avenue 5, and Dennis has worked on episodes of CSI: Cyber in 2015 and The Handmaid's Tale in 2017.
Merritt Wever has received excellent reviews from the public and critics for her role in the dramatic series Unbelievable as Detective Karen Duvall. She has also been awarded two Emmy Awards as a supporting actress in the series Godless (2017) and Nurse Jackie (2009). Domhnall Gleeson is a writer and actor, who we have seen as the father of Ben Weasley in the Harry Potter saga, as General Hux in the new Star Wars epic, as Captain Andrew Henry in the Oscar-winning The Revenant (2015) and as the eldest son who argues with his parents and brother in Mother! (2017) by Darren Aronofsky. Although he is especially remembered along with Alicia Vikander for his intense role as the programmer named Caleb in Alex Garland’s revered film Ex Machina (2014).
Let yourself be carried away by the romance, suspense, and adventure of the series Run in its first season. Beginning this April, on HBO and HBO GO.
