In the fictional town of Highbury, England, during the Regency period, Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy) lives a carefree life. We see her for the first time picking flowers for her governess's wedding, in the cold of a winter morning, as a servant ducks between two bushes to adequately illuminate the trees. The governess, Miss Taylor (Gemma Whelan), marries Mr. Weston (Rupert Graves) and leaves the Woodhouses, so Emma, bent on avoiding boredom at all costs, sets out to find a new companion. She then meets Harriet Smith (Mia Goth), a girl of unknown parents and uncertain fortune, whom Emma accepts in part to satisfy her own vanity and her matchmaking inclinations. Among the desirable men in this story are Mr. Knightley (Johnny Flynn), a sincere and respectable but somewhat cranky young man, wormy and cowardly Vicar Elton (Josh O'Connor) and Frank Churchill ( Callum Turner), the intriguing son of Mr. Weston. These characters, and some others no less important, such as Mr. Woodhouse (Bill Nighy), Emma's father, will be involved in social and erotic entanglements that are not so varied as they are subtle.

As you would expect from a movie based on a Jane Austen novel, the characters matter more than the plot. The film’s characters are never simple, but rather ambiguous, contradictory, capable of pettiness and cruelty as well as acts of generosity and candor. It is mainly Emma, the protagonist, who is more complex. She is not, as is almost a mandate for Hollywood rom-coms, an entirely lovable character. Emma can be cruel, childish, superficial, and manipulative, but she can also be intelligent, generous, and sometimes caring.
